Haha nah, I'd agree with you there because of the Angels.

Just didn't like somebody saying the second AL East team would have more wins than the AL West champ.

Detroit might reach 100 games if they stay healthy, the Central is awful and Cabrera and Fielder are a ridiculous force in the lineup.

I think the fact that the central is weak will keep detroit from winning 100 games.. You need to have someone pushing you..Id say they finish between 90 and 95 wins..I do think the Yankees have a shot at winning 100 games, only reason for that is because they might have to in order to win the division.. I'm not gonna predict the west because I dont kno how good the Angels really will be, Pujols is an incredible addition, but I still think their pitching could be suspect.. CJ Wilson isnt that great, obviously or Texas would have given him the money they gave Darvish.. Its gonna be about pitching.. There is alot of great lineups in the AL, gotta have a staff that can shut that down..

  • Wilson is overrated as a number one, but he is one of the best number twos in baseball, and a ridiculous number three or four. Also, Santana, Weaver, and Haren are all really good pitchers.

I don't think they'll make 100 games either, because they'll face us so many times. I don't think the Yanks make 100 wins, can't see it happening.

I dont kno man, our pitching staff is pretty loaded, and we have tremendous depth.. I pretty much expect the Yankees to win close to 100 games every year, and they usually are pretty close.. If the o/u is 95 wins for the Yanks I'd bet the over..

I'm just catching up on this thread and wanted to address your comments about what is wrong with the Phillies. I completely agree with most of what you said...though Wilson Valdez not coming back has NOTHING to do with their struggles. As much as Galvis has struggled WV is not any better. Fans remember his 'moments' such as pitching in the Reds game last year and forget how incredibly bad he was in general.

It really is maddening following this organization when you have even a modicum of an understanding of sabermetrics and the true value of a player's contribution to the team. A team like the Phillies has made some very smart decisions that contributed to a championship such as signing Werth for pennies, picking up Victorino in the Rule V draft, trading for Blanton (underrated move) . However, like you noted, those were all under the watchful eye of Pat Gillick. All Amaro has done is to amplify every weakness on the team at a huge expense. Signing Howard to that deal when any idiot knew he was already regressing was done only because they knew he was a fan favorite. It was a MAJOR blunder and unnecessary. He would have become a free agent this year and the Phillies could have signed Pujols or Prince for a lesser anual salary. Most Phillies fans are far to naive to realize how poorly this franchise is now run.

Imagine a team with this support base, TV market, financial flexibility that is run by a front office like that of the Royals or Mariners. That would be something.

I just couldn't get rid of him. There's no depth in the infield with 3 infielders at extreme injury risk. I would have kept him knowing what injury risks Polly and Chase were.

Amen sir. Ruben thinks sabermetrics are made up. Phils are the last franchise with a stats department. He has no idea how regression works and if he couldn't look at Howard's body type and think "he's about to fall apart," then he doesn't understand the game.

I just can't believe he's so averse to the numbers when it's clearly the way the game is turning. I bet he doesn't even know what fangraphs is.

I sure hope he doesn't know...because if he has all the stats in front of him and still makes the decisions that he does then we're even worse off than I thought.

Don't get me wrong, he makes some good moves, but more often than not he is cutting off his nose to spite his face. The Lee fiasco is the perfect example. I could buy all the logic behind trading for Halladay and even after the explanation I understood the thinking of then trading Lee but the fact is when you then go out and sign Lee the next year you just open yourself up for even more criticism. It looks like we will at least get a back-end reliever out of the Lee trade in Aumont and Tyson Gillies is off to a great start in AA so there may be something there too but still...was it worth it? The Ibanez & Polanco signings were never smart and the unnecessary haste of the Papelbon signing before the new CBA cost us a 1st round draft pick. Its just one thing after another with Amaro...and don't even get me started about Charlie..........oh the bunting.........

I was studying abroad when we signed Raul. My roommate there had just gotten me big into sabermetrics and he made fun of me every day for months about the signing. Then Raul had the luckiest 2 month period in his career and made Amaro look like a genius. Then bam, 2.5 years of showing why that was a horrendous signing.

I just laughed at the Paps move. It was just too unsurprising. He raced against himself to lose a pick. The pieces from Seattle maybe showing some signs of life was pure luck. Rube didn't even shop Cliff around. What kind of GM doesn't shop a trade offer and jumps at the first nibble?

Amaro just ruining things. So glad someone else sees it cause I feel like I'd have more success discussing this with a wall sometimes than I would with a Phils fan. So many here are just blind to it (although they're the same group overreacting and saying the Phils will be horrendous this year because of the slow start).

I'd trade Chollie for TLR countless times. Give me overmanaging and playing matchups or standing around bumbling around like an idiot without knowing what a double switch is.

Managing a baseball team is the easiest high paying job in sports. The only thing easier than managing is managing an AL team.

dont worry shav... they wont be able to deny/ignore it in a few years if he keeps doing what hes doing. They phils will be at the bottom of the standings by then

Don't say that, they downvote you for saying AL managers don't have as hard of a job.

And I hope you would TLR is a first ballot HOFer. Your boy, well I didn't know Phillie fans disliked him that much.

  • Joe Girardi rant: Pinch run Eduardo Nunez for A-Rod in the 8th inning of a tie game, intentionally walk the number 3 hitter to load the bases for the cleanup hitter with 2 outs in the bot 9th of a tie game.. If the Yankees win this its only because Jesus loves us, because Girardi is on some all new crazy crap this year...

  • Yay, so the Phillies finally got some offense going tonight vs. Josh Johnson of the Marlins. Hopefully they can keep it going tomorrow and start to get some consistency at the plate.

Anytime you can pass Markakis for Jones you have to do it. I thought that call was a no brainer myself. I like ripping Girardi as much as the next guy, but was actually in agreement with that one.

Yes he has. Marlins fans are probably starting to panic at least a little bit. Still very early in the season though so there's plenty of time for him to find a groove.
