  • I could care less about disagreeing, I have fun with that. The one throwing the insults around were you with that crap about the only places that care about winning are Boston and New York and the elitism you falsely hold about yourself.

Fwiw, I was having fun with the Joe Maddon thing. I laughed that someone could hate him, I didnt know anyone did. Like I said I don't get to watch much AL East baseball. You're the one who steppped in with the insults. I am happy you're proud where you come from, everyone should be. Doesn't mean you're the only one who measures anything in championships and you can talk down to me as a fan. Especially if your a Sawx fan.

That's all I am saying. If you think I'm a bully, I'm sorry. I think I'll sleep. I love debating on here.

That's one hell of a top though. I think saying the NL is "top light" would be an overstatement. Luckily, this gives the Phils as good a shot as any at the pennant.

Aint that the truth? Theres a three way pillow fight for the Central warming up, the East looks to be about the same, and idk whats going on out west. Probably Arizona.

At no time did I say they are the only places that care about winning. What I did say is that they are the only two places in baseball that success is measured solely by a World Series title. Everyone wants to win, but the pressure is just different there. The media and fans make it so. There is no second place in those cities. And I am a lifelong Yankees fan, not sure why you are assuming I am a Red Sox fan.

I did not intend to come off as elitist, but as a Yankees fan everyone thinks we are anyway so that doesn't bother me. Weren't you afterall the one who stated that everyone hates the successful ones?

I'd disagree with some of that but whatever, not worth arguing over. This is baseball talk.

And yes everyone hates the Yankees because they are the best. I openly admit that. Trust me most say they arent jealous, well screw that I am. I want 27 Championships, I am not happy with 11.

If we're going by that standard, there's no second place in Philly anymore either. There may have been before, but now it's WS or bust. I'd be pretty surprised if the pressure is less in Philly than in Boston. That said, it's been the same way in NY for 100 years, whereas it started in Boston and Philly less than a decade ago.

Back to back to back WS losses would be killer. I don't see it happening, but I don't know if I could handle it. Watching the Eagles lose all those NFC championships was just brutal back in the day.

  • Shavi if the Phils choke this year (aka don't make the playoffs or struggle doing so and a poor showing in the playoffs) how fast is Charlie canned?

Dunno if it will happen. Amaro is a terrible GM with no balls. Bottom 5 GM's in the league IMO. He should be gone first. Charlie should have been fired years ago, but that's another story. They both have skated by on Pat Gillick's success for far too long. The problem is everybody around here is putting all the pressure on Charlie, but I don't know why more doesn't go on Amaro. Great, he traded for Doc. What GM in the world wouldn't have made that move? He traded Cliff to Seattle for two nickels and blow job. He luckily could take advantage of Ed Wade being even worse than him and raid Houston. But the long term deal for Howard at 25/yr when howard still had two years left on his existing deal was beyond asinine. Not keeping Valdez for this year knowing Utley could be out a while was putrid. And our farm system has about one decent hitting prospect, and he's a freaking catcher.

So frustrated. I just wish the fans around here weren't so fairweather about baseball and could see it. They only see the last 5 years and demand championships. I saw the rise and am watching them get closer to the fall and it's killing me, cause there's so much more potential.

  • So after talking to Tex the other day and trying to explain why Cub fans are the dumbest fans (not worst, just dumbest) on the face of the planet, I have decided to make a weekly update every Tuesday or so with some of the best quips from Cubbie fans on the interwebz (lolz). Today I will give a special edition of ones personally said to me by my friends and co-workers. Some of you know that I am from Peoria, IL which is split almost 50-50 between both teams. Unfortunately most of my friends from home are Cub fans, which may reflect on me. Some good ones:

(On who was a better catcher, Soto or Molina)
Friend: Soto is miles and miles away a better offensive player, and like even as a defender. And defense doesn't matter that much for a catcher.
    Me: Huh?

    (On Theo Epstein hire)
Friend: I guarantee at least three WS victories in the next 10 years.
Me: You know you won't be good for like 2-3 years as you shed dead weight and rebuild the minors, you have a terrible ML system.
Friend: 3 WS in 10 years isn't hard, we got this.

(On Tony LaRussa, 24 hours after he retired)
Friend: Dude, did you hear that Larussa retired? Holy shit.
Me: Yes I'm a Cards fan I know when our manager retires. Next stop: Cooperstown.
Friend: You think he will eventually be in the HOF?
Me: God I need new friends.

(On Ron Santo being elected to the HOF)
Boss: OMG, its so great aren't you happy?
Me: No, I don't think he deserved it. He got in because he died, and that's kind of a slap in the face. I liked Santo but come one if his numbers weren't good enough then why now after he passed?
Boss: Because he's a great Cub and great Cubs need to get in!
    *smh*

(On Kosuke Fukudome's first game as a Cub)
Friend: HE IS ICHIRO WITH POWER. HOF LOCK! (totally sober)
    Me: Its 1 game.
Friend: I guarantee he will be a bargain with the way he produces.

(In Derrek Lee's big year with the Cubs)
Friend: I would never EVER trade Derrek Lee for Albert Pujols straight up. Pujols is so overrated, no GM would do that.
    Me: Huh?

    (On this year's Cubbie team)
Friend: Cubs aren't bad, they probably win the Wild Card this year.
Me: Wait, what? I mean maybe, but they look like shit. If that happens it'd be a miracle.
    Friend: Real Cub fans believe.
Me: The Chicago Tribune just released a poll asking if the Cubs will make the playoffs this year. 100% respnded they wouldn't. That's in Chicago.
    Friend: Not real Cub fans.

(I was at Wrigley the day the Cards traded for Matt Holliday a few years back)
Me: BAHAHAHAHA the Cubs just gave a HR to Aaron Harang!
Friend: *stands up* THIS MOTHER F*CKER IS A CARDS FAN *points at me*
    Me: *wave*
Random Fan: FU A$$HOLE! Good trade getting Matt Holliday but he's overrated and won't get you to the playoffs.
(Note: We won the division that year after taking first place a few days later and never giving it up).

(On the Cubs being the best sports franchise ever, yes this was a real discussion one week ago)
Me: Todd, they can't be. They are like the poster child of losing franchises.
Todd: How so? They win all the time.
    Me: 1908
Todd: Wtf does that have to do with anything? Not winning WS doesn't make them a losing franchise, we still have Wrigley Field!

Some good ones. I know I forgot a ton, its like an every day occurance with them. They aren't bad people, just spend too much time in Chicago which leads to severe brain trauma.

    MTayl72

  • I cant say Ive ever had a real conversation with a Cubs fan.. I dont think I ever will.. They sound like Rutgers fans.."Best franchise in baseball" hahahahahahaha

I've gone on rants before trying to describe the pain, and I never do it justice. I honestly can't tell you how badly that second one hurt.

The ONLY two consoling things about what happened was that it was probably the most epic WS in history, and that the most important cogs of that team (and front office) came back.

By the way, well done MTayl. And yes, I want one VERY, VERY badly.

Makes so much sense why you say the IL govt is the way it is, you're surrounded by morons.

  • I'm RMJing this thing, in case you couldn't tell.

I had an interesting discussion with a Phils fan the other day about why the Phillies will still win the WS and why he doesn't think Andrew Mccutchen is a good player. Pretty funny stuff. Nice guy, huge baseball fan, but obviously a huge homer.

Anywho, Yu looked stupendous last night.

That one happened yesterday. The survey was last week.

  • It doesn't seem like the ones from Chicago are the ones who are brain dead. At least they realize they're a crap team with no chance to win a pretty weak division.

Honestly, thats what shocked me about the poll taken. The Chicago ones are the worst usually.

  • So this Tigers/Rays series is like a AL power matchup?

    Nice.

After our opening of the new disco in Miami the Cardinals face 27 straight games against division foes. Not nearly that schedule, and I am not trying to make it sound that way, but a very very interesting and important stretch of games.

  • I love when PTI and those shows talk about baseball now - like 0-4 or 0-3 mean anything. I'm still baffled by anyone who cares what happens before July in baseball.

These games still count. Dont ruin the thread bills. Hahaha

Btw, I think divisions and uneven scheduling in baseball are stupid. Balance the schedule, take the best 4 teams, cut this stupid 1 game WC, and lets go.

It'll never happen, cus it makes too much sense.

I dont kno how I feel about the new playoff situation yet.. It certainly puts a premium on winning your division.. Potential for some serious problems tho.. What happens if the Yankees go 101-61 and the Rays go 95-67, and say the Angels go 85-77, then they have to play 1 game to decide who moves on? Not really fair IMO.. Id be pissed if I won enough games to win every other division in MLB and then lose one game to a team with a worse record and my season is over.. I think if they make it a 3 game series that makes it a little different but not this 1 game crap..

Want to make a friendly sig bet that the Yanks don't get 100 wins, and the Rangers end up with more wins than the second place team in the AL East?

What you are talking about is 2 different bets.. I included the Angels in my above post because I am expecting Texas to win their division and win plenty of games.. Also the number were arbitrary as it was just an example.. Now if you'd like to make a sig bet of who will win more games between the Yanks and Rangers I'd gladly accept, work up some terms..

    JTNITTANY

  • Haha nah, I'd agree with you there because of the Angels.

Just didn't like somebody saying the second AL East team would have more wins than the AL West champ.

Detroit might reach 100 games if they stay healthy, the Central is awful and Cabrera and Fielder are a ridiculous force in the lineup.
