2012 MLB Season Thread

  • Hopefully you guys aren't opposed to an MLB thread since it seems like a good bit of us are baseball fans too. I noticed some dialogue in the off topic thread but figured it would get lost in translation in there with all the other stuff that is discussed, so why not start an MLB thread?

    good idea...

just had to vent about the phils today. charlie cost them the game. Idk what it is about pittsburgh but the phils just can't win there.

I like pittsburgh though. their future prospects are really looking up. Mccutchten is awesome. had him as a fantasy player last year and he came through. plus he seems like a great guy. seemed like he was having a lot of fun out there, which is good to see

  • I'm a Phillies fan and am deeply concerned with their offense, even when Utley and Howard come back. Both are only getting older and can't seem to stay healthy. Howard has been average/below average at best since the Phillies won the World Series in 2008. I feel bad for the pitching staff.

i agree.. their offense is terrible. luckily they only need to push over a few runs a game. once pierre starts playing more and jimmy and shane get into it i think we'll be better. lots of speed and good OBP.. plus hunter is going to be a monster.

if youre really desperate for hitting and dont mind give up a few runs in the field, the 2-3 best hitting OF for the phillies is in AAA

Won 125 total games that year against 50 losses including playoffs.

    Not too shabby I guess.

  • The Orioles are 3-0 to start the season.

The last time they did that was 2011, they started 4-0. It ended up being a rather spectacular season for the O's as they went on to win 69 games against just 93 losses. Just missing the playoffs by a mere 22 games.

If this gets rolling I'll pin it up.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • My rotisserie team kicked butt on Saturday........yesterday, not so much. Miraculously, I am somehow still in 3rd place in our 10 team league.

You should tell your manager it's a long season. He strategized that series like he was Tony LaRussa in October.

  • Tigers fan here... went to 2 of the 3 games this weekend v the ChokeSox, both walk off wins... Love this Tigers team, the loss of Fister will hurt though...

Besides PSU Football, fantasy baseball is a close #2 obsession... anyone playing in a shallower league, or a 10 teamer... Papi Ortiz may be available, man did he look goof this weekend. They said he lost #20lbs, but he looked like it was closer to #40... raked the ball all weekend, and moved great around the bases. And this comes from someone who despises him and the Sox... just saying.

  • The NL east is going to be a dogfight. IMO it's anyone's division. The case can be made for/against every single team to have a shot. In the end, I think they all beat up on each other too much and miss out on the wildcards.

Lets go Nationals, I'm ready for a winning season.

most true statement ever, nobody knows how to kill momentum and take out a pitcher who still has his stuff like Girardi

So he was awesome? I love Joe Maddon, and wanted the Cards to look into him for their managing post. Happy with Matheny though.

OH MY GOD A RAYS FAN!! I didnt kno that you actually existed :) Seriously tho, you took care of business early on, but everyone knows the Yanks dont hit their stride until June.. This year is going to be crazy. The whole American League is stacked..

He intentionally walked the bases loaded, in the 1st inning, of the 1st game of the year, with our ace on the bump.. Who does that?

Frankly, I despise Maddon more than Urban Meyer or Bret Bielema.

Idk why that made me laugh. Maddon is the man, but everyone hates the successful ones.

You love Joe Girardi because he's from Peoria..

Maddon is a good manager but he also gets a lot of credit that he doesnt deserve.. He had no business winning managerof the year last year.. Only reason they made the playoffs last year was because the Red Sux lost every game they played in September.. If the Red Sux were only slightly less crappy in September the Rays dont make the playoffs.. They got really lucky..

And I've never said any different. Though he is a Cub fan.

That said I have a lot of respect for him as a manager as well, which I usually don't for AL managers especially ones for Boston or the Yankees. Highest payroll and the DH, completely limits the true managing needed to be done. Joe Torre couldn't do shit with the Cardinals, not all his fault as the ownership wasn't great either, but throw $175+ million and the DH and boom he wins a ton.

Not a bad manager, the championships alone make him a HOFer, but much easier to do there than in the Senior circuit.

Some bold statements there.. I'd argue its much harder to win in the AL than in the NL.. Payroll is really just a convenient excuse for people.. As for Girardi I get very angry with him, but I love him at the same time.. I think he tends to overmanage.. He is the anti Joe Torre, Torre was much more relaxed and let things go for too long, Girardi makes too many in game decisions that he doesnt have to do.. Sometimes you just have to let them play..
