"OSU AD Gene Smith to lobby for Penn State

I have a feeling that this guy is just trolling

That is the only benefit I see of the upvotes and downvotes. The OP obviously doesn't troll much.

Of course, he might say "I don't always troll, but when I do, I get those Nittany Lions hookline and sinker"

Exactly. The idea that Emmert will not use this power in the future is naive - especially if NCAA's new policy proposal is passed in October.

Yyyyyyyep. Ask the NFL how things have gone with Goodell. Once you set precedence and overstep to flex your muscles, your every decision will be measured as such.

  • Gene Smith is an idiot. If Gene Marsh can't help us, I don't see what Smith can do. Hopefully the lawsuits go somewhere. But I'm doubtful of that as well.

I am somewhat optimistically thinking along your lines Geddy.
I do not believe, not for a second, the NCAA will hear any appeals, or reduce any sanctions, etc this quick or anytime in the near future. This story is still headline news, and if they reduced the sanctions at this point it would obviously mean they support child abuse (TIC).
However... lets let emotions cool, and allow the next biggest scandal ever to take some headline space from PSU, allow for a story or two of PSU missed bowl games... and then say come spring of 2014.... Labor Day weekend, that Friday afternoon the NCAA issues a simple statement stating the PSU sanctions are being reduced to XXX and XXX ( maybe eligible for a bowl game in 2015 v 2016 and scholarship limit increases to 75, etc) due to compliance and blah blah blah...
By that point, most of the world won't care any more... will really not even remember what the sanctions were to begin with or when they were suppose to have ended, etc...

The time to fight is now!!!!why are u being so passive??

Holy crap, we're probably going to get stronger sanctions with him trying to help.

  • I am not optimistic about a sanctions reduction.

The BOT is going to ratify the consent decree on Sunday. They already said “this consent decree is the best possible outcome.”

The NCAA will laugh off all requests/demands for an appeal. The federal courts will dismiss all cases filed by former players, a minority of the BOT, etc. because of lack of standing.

The NCAA will not lessen the sanctions. They know that the vast majority of people will not read the Freeh Report. They will get their news from ESPN, FOX, SI, their local newspaper, etc., and the vast majority of those media outlets have painted Penn State as guilty of the cover-up of child molestation in order to protect the football program. They have little incentive to try and uncover facts to demonstrate that they were wrong.

There will be a few media members like Slaten who do actually read the Freeh Report and rail against the NCAA for its improper actions. But they are a minority. As for groups like MROB's group, Ray Blehar, PS4RS, framing Paterno.com, etc., they’ll be ignored by everyone except Penn State fans. They aren’t mainstream media and they’ll be viewed as Penn State supporters/boosters whining about the sanctions. They’re just pissing in the wind.

The NCAA knows that except for Penn State fans and a very small minority of the media, it has public support for the sanctions. Those members of the mainstream media who have questioned the sanctions will soon move on to the next story. They aren’t invested in it like Penn State fans. They won’t be willing to do the work necessary to truly investigate the matter. Any good, in-depth investigation will take a lot of time and effort. I don’t see it happening.

The NCAA doesn’t care if a few media people call them out when they know the majority won’t, and the minority won’t follow up. Even the media who criticized them for violating their constitution and circumventing their rules mostly ended up saying basically, “well, that’s just the way it goes.”

Charles Robinson would have the credibility to do an investigative piece on the NCAA’s inconsistency in general and the Penn State fiasco in particular. But I wouldn’t hold my breath on that happening.

I also wouldn’t expect the sanctions to be lessened. Emmert and the NCAA don’t like admitting to mistakes. Maybe if Emmert retires and the football team and the local economy have been completely decimated, a new president could lighten the sanctions. Then they could justify the decision as benefiting the community – not Penn State. And any such decision would probably require an additional fine or something so they could show that the lessening of sanctions is for the community and they are still being tough on Penn State.

But I wouldn’t even count on that. Because the NCAA does not like to admit mistakes.

sanctions to be lessened' Heard it from a friend that works inside the athletic department

Quick question, what is the B1G doing with the Penn State's $13 million?

I know the NCAA is using it to operate their new program to reduce child abuse in youth athletics, but I forget what the B1G said they were going to do with it?

BTW, I think the NCAA should make it very transparent how they spend the money...to me it sounds like an opportunity to hire some more of academic friends and buy some new equipment.

I am sorry, but an organization like the NCAA should have contracted out that money to RAINN or another child abuse organization more appropriate to establish a program...(Maybe, I am wrong and they will...)

I am no fan of Delaney, but he's not the one who hung us out to dry here. He merely executed the directives of the conference's Council of Presidents/Chancellors. Delaney advocated for the prohibition of intraconference transfers when the NCAA made us a meat market, but was overruled by the presidents. It is not accurate to say that most of the presidents who screwed us were from small universities. Our own conference presidents ignored the advice of the commissioner to screw us as well.

Most of the prsidents where from samller unversities, not major BCS school.

I think PSU JAG was referring the the Big 10's decision to waive the conference rule that would require athletes to sit out a year if they transferred.

When USC was sanctioned and the NCAA allowed free transfers, the Pac 12 refused to waive its conference rule. As a result, Pac 12 teams weren't attractive to USC players because they would have had to sit out, whereas by transferring OOC, they could play immediately.

The Big 10 conference waived its rule, thereby allowing PSU players to transfer in-conference and play immediately. I believe JAG was saying Delaney opposed waiving the rule, but the presidents overruled him.

On the other hand, the NCAA executive committee that agreed to the 4-year death penalty is mostly made up of presidents from smaller schools. So they handed down the first (improper) decision that screwed Penn State. Then the Big 10 presidents piled on.
