Penn State commitment Camren Williams really had no reason to make the trek from Massachusetts to Happy Valley this weekend for the Nittany Lions' senior camp. Regardless, the Catholic Memorial standout spent the last two days on campus.
According to Williams, it was time well spent.
"It went really well. I did the camp yesterday, felt I did really good, I learned a lot from Coach Van," he said. "It was probably the best informational camp that I've ever been to. He touched on a lot about pass coverage and linebackers in the zone and different techniques to use. It went really well. I just kept building the relationship with all the coaches - I talked to Coach Van, Coach Kenney, Coach Kav, Coach Buggs, Coach McQueary - pretty much everybody. It just went well."
Williams said his time with Vanderlinden on the practice field reinforced his decision to attend Penn State.
"I'm not really an experienced linebacker, I've played maybe five games at linebacker in my whole high school career," he said. "I've always been a defensive back/safety, so going to Coach Van, who is a really, really good teacher on technique with linebackers, it was definitely huge in getting me to be the best player that I can possibly be."
Williams spent time this weekend with prospects Joey O'Connor and Will Mahone.
"I heard Joey O'Connor did really, really well in the one-on-ones, and I got to go against Will Mahone in the one-on-ones, so that was really cool," he said. "He got me once and I got him once, so that was cool."
Williams also got a chance to meet Penn State offensive line commitment Anthony Stanko for the first time over the weekend.
"I talked to Stanko about how great the class is shaping up," said Williams. "He's working hard with recruiting other kids and I'm doing the same. He talks to Will Mahone a lot because he's in the same area as Will. It was cool talking to him, I met his dad, too, so it was great to finally meet him."
Also noted as an outspoken recruiter for the Nittany Lions, Williams also spent some time chatting up some of the Nittany Lions' other top prospects that were attending the camp. Click below for notes on Williams' recruiting efforts over the weekend.
