Three Lions not with team

Newsome is not with the team in Tampa.

Penn State is without three reserve underclassmen in Tampa as they prepare to face Florida in the Outback Bowl, sources have reported to Lions247.com.

Sophomore quarterback Kevin Newsome, redshirt sophomore tight end Mark Wedderburn and true freshman offensive tackle Thomas Ricketts did not make the trip.

Mulitple sources have reported that Newsome will seek a transfer at the completion of the fall academic semester at Penn State. Joe Paterno indicated two weeks ago that Newsome was welcome to come back for the spring, but sources have said that there is a remote chance of that happening.

Newsome played in just six games this season, after coming into the year as the favorite to win the starting job at quarterback. When Rob Bolden went down with a concussion midway through the year, the Nittany Lions turned to Matt McGloin. Newsome completed six of 13 passes for 78 yards and ran for a touchdown in limited action.

Wedderburn played in just one game this season, the 2010 opener against Youngstown State. He was passed on the depth chart by redshirt freshman Garry Gilliam and true freshman Kevin Haplea. He did not record a catch this season, and has struggled with putting on weight since arriving on campus.

Ricketts is a different story, as he was kept behind in Pennsylvania for medical reasons. The true freshman tackle will have his tonsils removed while on break. The Wexford, Pa., native sat out this season as a redshirt.
