Penn State picks up a camp commit

Derek Dowrey at John Handley

Winchester (Va.) John Handley defensive tackle Derek Dowrey has committed to Penn State.

"Camp was pretty good, just the last couple of days wokring hard with Coach Johnson," he said. "He offered me a scholarship and I accepted it on the spot."

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Dowrey has become familiar with Penn State over the last year.

"This is the fifth time I've been to Penn state. I came to two games, a spring practice and back to camp. I've been comparing schools to Penn State. Nothing ever compared. I've always like Penn State a lot. I didn't want to risk waiting on the offer. I thought it was best to accept right away to avoid any way that I could possibly lose the scholarship. I think I went with the school that I fit the best."

Andrew Dzurita contributed to this report.
