Carson more comfortable this season

A year ago at this time, even Glenn Carson himself was a little surprised to see his name at the top of the depth chart at middle linebacker. This season, Carson is more comfortable with his role having 11 starts under his belt.

Carson recorded 74 tackles a year ago.

"Having that playing experience, I kind of know what to expect," said Carson. "I feel so much more comfortable out on the field. This year I'm more excited to go out there and I feel like the defensive scheme is a lot of fun. I'm ready to go out there and play that defensive scheme."

Carson is a part of a group of linebackers that is getting plenty of preseason praise, as he is flanked by preseason All-American Gerald Hodges and veteran standout Michael Mauti. Despite the positive reviews, Carson said that the group isn't buying into the hype.

"I don't think any of us really listen to the media or believe any kind of the hype that they're saying. We kind of all are just focused on winning games," he said. "Whatever it takes, whatever we can possibly do to win this game is what we're going to do. Whatever the outcome is from that, it is what it is, but we just want to win games and we're going to do whatever we can to help that."

The junior finished fourth on the squad with 74 tackles last season, and is hoping that Ted Roof's new scheme will boost his production in 2012.

"It's definitely going to be exciting, I'm excited to maybe blitz a little bit more and rush the quarterback. It's something that I never really did, and I'm excited for that," he said. "All three of us out on the field, even though I missed Mauti last year because I only had him for a couple of games, it's nice having him back. I'm really excited to play with those guys. I enjoy playing with them so much, that's one of the reasons why I could never imagine leaving this place."

For those reasons and more, Carson didn't have a tough time deciding to return to Penn State.

"No, not really. I love playing with this defense and this University, it really doesn't get much better," said Carson. "Standing in the stadium right now, it's unreal. Every day is a bowl game, so it wasn't much of a decision."
