Maggie Lucas scored 19 points on 50 percent shooting, Alex Bentley added 18 points and No. 3 seed Penn State used a big second half to oust Cal Poly 85-55 in its first NCAA Tournament appearance on Sunday night.
The Lady Lions advance to the second round and will face the winner of LSU-Green Bay on Tuesday in Baton Rouge, La.
Until a three-pointer by Caroline Reeves with 4:32 remaining in the second half, all of Cal Poly’s field goals had come from Molly Schlemer, who singlehandedly kept the Mustangs (21-11, 13-5 Big West) in the game.
The Mustangs led for the majority of the first half before a Lucas steal and layup at the 6:57 mark changed momentum.
The Lady Lions (26-5, 14-2 Big Ten) then picked up the pace and controlled the rest of the game thanks to a 47-27 second half.
Lucas finished the day with four steals and Talia East blocked three shots. The Lady Lions totaled seven blocks and forced 13 Cal Poly into many mistakes.
Mia Nickson posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 boards and East grabbed 12 rebounds. The Lady Lions out-rebounded Cal Poly 50-33 and outscored the Mustangs 44-28 in the paint.
