Depth Chart

Last week, there were no notable changes in the depth chart. This week there are a few noteworthy items.

- Freshman quarterback Steven Bench is now listed as the No. 2 quarterback with Paul Jones third. We reported last week that Jones was starting to get reps at other positions. Bench went into the game for starter Matt McGloin when he took multiple shots to the elbow and went to the locker room on Saturday.

- At running back, Akeel Lynch has yet to play and he is now listed as the fifth guy behind Bill Belton, Derek Day, Zach Zwinak and Curtis Dukes. Belton and Day are listed as the the possible starters, Zwinak and Dukes are also tied together with an 'OR.' Both Belton and Day are listed as possible on the depth chart.

- At the second wide receiver spot, Shawney Kersey is now listed as the starter without an 'OR' between he and freshman Trevor Williams. Brandon Moseby-Felder has hopped above Christian Kuntz and shaken the 'OR' label between them.

- In the slot, Alex Kenney is now listed as the lone starter. He was sharing an 'OR' with Evan Lewis.

- At right defensive tackle, DaQuan Jones is now listed as the starter. He was previously sharing an 'OR' with senior James Terry.

- At strong safety, Stephen Obeng-Agyapong is no longer sharing an 'OR' with Jake Fagnano and is listed as the starter.

- For the first time this season, Penn State has separated its kick and punt returners. Adrian Amos, Alex Kenney and Bill Belton are the three listed at kick return, while Evan Lewis and Jesse Della Valle are noted as punter returners. Linebacker Gerald Hodges is no longer on the list as a return man.

From what I'm hearing, I'm not confident that Belton and Day will be ready to go this week. Could see Dukes get his first start against Navy.

This would make me happy. Not that those guys are hurt of course, but that Dukes can get a chance to really step up.

I think Dukes blows up Navy and has a break out game. I dont see why 125 yards and two scores is out of the question here. If he gets 20 carries against this Navy Defense I'm really optomistic of how he's gonna produce Saturday.

I believe that's the plan, but if other injuries happen to either Dukes or Zwinak, there's a good chance Lynch will play.

    • Eugene Lewis, Trevor Williams or Alex Kenney have to be better than Evan Lewis and Jesse Della Valle. Geez that combo does not scare anyone. It seems like we have given up on Punt Return and are just happy with catching the ball safely.

    • With the possibility of the open transfer still out there--is anyone else a "lot" concerned that Lynch leaves. I mean if he can't break onto the field this year, he might see the opportunity to play elsewhere promising...I hope the staff has a hold of this situation--as far as a relationship and Lynch knows the plan of action..I dont feel our rb situation is that great as it is...

I think Lynch may have wanted to redshirt so he could play in a bowl game.

I don't think it is a matter of Lynch not being able to play, but I get the impression that OB really wants to red-shirt Lynch so that he can still play for 4 years....especially considering that our RB recruiting is in limbo right now.

Im all for that..I just hope and pray they are on the same page-Not that you can coach on a players wants and needs-but....I guess this is where "faith" comes into play!!pray

I also agree with the recruiting of rb's in limbo--thats what has me worried...

    • So Donovan Smith is not on the injury report? The OL takes a huge blow with him on the bench.

Probably so but we need him and Lynch on the field IMO.

Yes. Any of our current freshman that ultimately chose to stay this year may have a change of heart and transfer after this season, if they want if they are upset about redshirting or their PT this year.

    • I know there is a lot of concern right now in regards to red shirting players or getting them onto the field, but we cannot also get caught up with focusing on the “now”. Red shirting Lewis and Lynch are great ideas in that we have a bunch of young receivers and our starting rb is only a sophomore along with 3 other capable runners. If we can red shirt these guys and a few others then we are keeping the cupboard somewhat full at least a couple more years. I couldn’t imagine that BOB has not been straightforward with these guys and they understand the situation. We are very young this year, which bodes well for the future, but our depth will be more of an issue if we cannot red shirt some of the better players we got from the 2012 class. The faith that we need is that we have not seen most of the offense playbook and that once BOB figures out the personnel/package issues we will see the passing game open up more. That should make it easier to sell the program to top skill players for the 2014 class as there will only be a couple more years of sanctions. I understand that the logical argument to this is that we need the best players on field now to sell our current group of recruits that BOB’s system is worth coming here for. I will say that if we see improvements from week to week and we are competitive in the B1G games, then they will stick with us and we will still get some top recruits in 2014.

    • Redshirting those two means Hack will have Breneman, Lynch, and Lewis for weapons the next four years. I think this will help in the long run in trying to keep Hack committed.

      MikePSU82

    • Let's even hope for the best situation, Bench turns into a very good QB and can get a Juco transfer as a backup. RS Hack and let him develop into the QB we all expect him to become. We will have our QB situation set for the next 4 years, barring injury.

Let's hope Hack sticks. Still a long time till Feb.
