New commit 'fired up' for PSU

Over a year of relationship building talks between newly appointed Penn State men’s basketball head man Pat Chambers and 2012 guard Akosa Maduegbunam came to fruition on Tuesday, as Maduegbunam became Chambers’ first recruit under the new regime.

Maduegbunam chose the Nittany Lions over offers from Boston University, Temple and Northeastern, among others.

Pronounced Mah-ga-way-boo-nam, the Charlestown, Mass., native was speaking with Chambers during his time at Boston University, an occurrence which continued when the head coach moved on to Penn State.

“Coach talked to me throughout the year and we developed a really great relationship, a very strong bond that can’t be broken now,” he said on Wednesday.

“He is the kind of guy who will be in my life for good, someone who will be at my wedding. So coach Chambers and his staff did a really good job recruiting, they recruited me as a kid and as a person first, as well as my work ethic.”

After coming to State College for a visit on Monday, Maduegbunam toured the facilities and campus, coming away very impressed.

“I love it, I love the community feel to the campus. It is a college town and everyone is into it, and that is one of the great things I look forward to when I arrive at Penn State.”

The 6-foot-3 guard chose the Nittany Lions over offers from Boston University, Temple and Northeastern, among others.

A self-described combo guard, Maduegbunam saw great improvements last season for Charlestown High School, averaging 22 points and eight boards from the shooting guard position.

“I'm a good jump shooter, I like to push the ball and get a lot of lay-ups and dunks, and in the half court set shooting some threes,” Maduegbunam said of his offense. “I also take pride in defending, shutting my defender down and helping the team on the defensive side of things.”

With a senior season left to continue honing his skills, the 185-pounder is looking to improve his ball-handling skills, especially with a defender harassing him in the backcourt.

Relieved to have the recruiting process out of the way, Maduegbunam had three words to describe how he felt upon committing to the Nittany Lions – a phrase that is an apparant favorite of coach Chambers and assistant coach Keith Urgo.

“I'm fired up.”
