Walton sticks with Penn State

Jonathan Walton

Walton told his mother, ''Even the grass is greener there."

Penn State assistant coach Ted Roof has been tracking Daphne (Ala.) Bayside Academy linebacker Jonathan Walton since the summer, and on Sunday he finally got his man.

I can't understand why more kids don't feel this way.

I agree with you. This is one conversation I will be having with my son one day, IF he is good enough to get recruited for a scholarship. I would never want to be a Plan B or C and turn down a school who has been on you for a while; shown alot of interest in you and thinks you can certainly make an impact on the roster. PSU has benefitted from this over the years to. Let's be honest.

I see OSU got a verbal from Munger. He was given a scholarship a while back; tried to verbal a few times and was told not now, while UCLA, Auburn and other pretty decent programs were on him as a Plan A type the entire time.

I understand your point, but you also don't know all the specifics about an individuals situation. Maybe going to UCLA and being 3000 miles from home, didn't make sense for Munger? Maybe he wanted to stay in the midwest so his family could see him play?

And reality, recruiting is all a game... I am sure there are just as many kids told they are plan A, when in fact, they are not. But once kids get on campus...the recruiting stories, who was the top target, who said what to whom... are all out the window... If a kid gets to camp, and makes an impression on the coaches, works his ass off, and earns a spot on the depth chart, the coaches sure aren't going to hold it against him that they really wanted Jimmy Jones from FL as the MLB in their defensive scheme, and now they are stuck with the fall back plan.. once he gets on campus, if he can play and can get it done in the classroom, he will play, whether he is 1st, 2nd or 5th fiddle is irrelevant long before.

    • Ted Roof knowing the South is cruical with the deomgraphic shift. Everybody loved and admired Tom Bradley but this guy brings alot to the table too.

For what was thought to be the most questionable new hire by BOB, Ted Roof is turning out to be the 2nd best (after Fitz).

    • lets not start being one of those monday morning coaches...Bob has a good handle on things.

    • ask Micheal J Fox if being B plan was okay. He wasn't cast originally in BACK TO THE FUTURE. But it turned out OK for him. In the final analysis it doesn't matter if you were first choice. It's that you get the shot.

    • I get the kids who want to go to one school be it their favorite growing up, or family ties(see what I did there), or a revered coach. There are certain kids who just jump at a last minute offer by the popular school. Despite being "wanted" by other programs from day one. It has worked both ways for us over the last few years. We both been swooped in on late and done some swooping of our own.

    • Walton has great size and speed but needs tons of work with his technique! Great thing we have one of the best linebacker coaches going. This kid fixes his technique he could be special. First, thing Vandy will fix is his stance and standing straight up on snap. The kid can really run...I like this pickup. He may even develop into a DE.

    • I get the 2nd fiddle idea... But that's a gray area type of question.

If you're talking about your future wife... Yeah I wouldnt want to be the "back-up plan". But in recruiting, if Penn State is my "dream school", I dont care how I get there if I can. Drew Astorino was a last hour offer. Amos was very late in the class. Get there = the goal. Use the rest as inspiration if you dont feel like you got enough hype. Practice until you force your way onto the field.
