Suspended fifth-year senior running back Stephfon Green has been reinstated to by head coach Joe Paterno. Green posted the news on his Twitter account on Thursday night and sources have confirmed the report with Lions247.com.
Green has not practiced with the team this season after it was reported that he was indefinitely suspended for breaking a team rule prior to preseason practice.
The decision to leave Green off the roster was not a popular one with teammates, several of whom went to bat for him with Paterno. The team also submitted a petition to have him reinstated, led by his senior classmates. Despite his declining numbers, the Bronx native has remained one of the Nittany Lions' most outspoken leaders and one of the more popular figures on the team.
Green's return isn't without a catch, however, as it will likely carry with it a multiple game suspension, a source said.
Paterno had said at his media day press conference that he didn't expect Green to return at all.
"I doubt if he’ll be back,” Paterno said.
“Stephfon has had some problems with me and right now I think for the benefit and especially the good of the football team, it might be better if he backs away right now.”
Green carried just 48 times for 188 yards and a touchdown as a junior, and his production has dropped each year since he made his debut in 2008. That season he ran for 578 yards and scored four times, his best statistical output to date.
