By The Numbers - Iowa

Penn State stayed on the roll it had established before the bye week and blew away Iowa in a dominant 38-14 win this past Saturday. The Nittany Lions (5-2, 3-0 Big Ten) now turn their attention to a dangerous and undefeated Ohio State team. Here's a look at a few statistical trends of note as Happy Valley gears up for its biggest showdown of 2012.

Bill Belton

Bill Belton nearly equaled his 2012 season total with his 103-yard performance against Iowa.

5.14

Solo tackles per game this season by senior linebacker Michael Mauti. Only three other players in the Big Ten (Wisconsin's Mike Taylor, Ohio State's Ryan Shazier and Northwestern's Damien Proby) are averaging more solos per game this season.

64.25

Average number of offensive plays by Penn State's last four opponents, who have produced only 268.5 yards per game. By contrast, the Nittany Lions have averaged 87.25 plays and 455.5 yards per game during the same span.

549

Penn State's total rushing yards over last three games, an average of 3.6 per carry. The Nittany Lions totaled 496 yards rushing in their first four games, an average of 3.7.

2

Number of first-half touchdowns allowed by the defense (Northwestern had a second-quarter TD after a muffed punt by Jesse Della Valle deep in Penn State territory). Penn State has allowed only 23 first-half points overall this season.

15

Number of first downs via the pass Penn State needs to eclipse its 2011 total of 107. The Nittany Lions are averaging 13.3 passing first downs per game, the best mark in the conference.

13

Catches redshirt freshman Kyle Carter needs to break Penn State's single-season reception mark by a tight end (Andrew Quarless had 41 receptions in 2009).

103

Rushing yards against Iowa by Bill Belton on 16 carries. He'd had 120 yards on his previous 33 carries.

271.8

Passing yards per game allowed by Ohio State's defense this season. Among Big Ten teams, only Northwestern (279.8) is allowing more.

96,357

Penn State's average home attendance through the first four games of 2012.

109,322

Average attendance for the five Penn State-Ohio State games in Beaver Stadium since the most recent expansion in 2001.

Yeah, I screwed that up (original version of the story had 1 TD ... I've since corrected it). For some reason I thought that Mark's punt return was in the first half, not the second. Good catch.

Seriously Jeff, your response to this outburst is ridiculously classy. Either way, your point that teams struggle heavily against this defense in the first half was noted. So glad that teams are not getting off to the same fast starts they were the past couple of years. Love these posts man.
